Introduction to statistics for biologists

| Most biologists are confronted with statistical questions when planning experiments, analyzing data or preparing a poster or a publication. Common problems include finding good ways to summarize data, represent it graphically, or test the significance of various research hypotheses. During this workshop, we will introduce some basic notions of statistics which are likely to be useful for biologists who know nothing or little about the topic. The exact program will depend on the interests of the participants; people who are interested in coming to this workshop will be asked a few weeks beforehand to answer a short list of questions so that we can know which topics will be most appropriated. They are also strongly encouraged (and the relevant data) that they may have; problems which fit the workshop's goals and are of broad interest will be used as examples in order to make the course more concrete. More advanced problems can be discussed with the teachers during the exercice session, or may form the basis for a subsequent course. |
