Finding and analysing eucaryotic promoters

Friday November 03, 2006

The field of transcriptional regulation has been revolutionized by novel high-throughput technologies for gemome-wide characterization of promoter regions: 5' SAGE and CAGE for mapping transcription start sites, ChIP-chip for mapping in vivo binding sites of transcription factors and other chromatin proteins, microarrays and sequencing-based methods for global transcriptome monitoring. There is hope that the vast amounts of new data produced by these technologies will enable researchers to decipher the gene regulatory networks that control the development of higher organisms. The bioinformatics tools necessary to achieve this ambitious goal are not yet ready but significant progress has been made over the last few years in certain areas, notably promoter sequence analysis.
This course presents a critical overview of the current bioinformatics approaches to unravel the organization of promoters and gene regulatory regions, as well as the multiple technologies exploited to experimentally verify them.

The practicals will introduce some useful web-based resources to analyze promoter regions, potentially in conjunction with other functional genomics data.
