The SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics is an independent non-profit foundation recognised of public utility. Its 31 research and service groups develop, maintain and provide core bioinformatics resources that are highly appreciated by the worldwide life sciences community. SIB also allows for an efficient nationwide coordination of the bioinformatics research and education activities of its groups at its partner institutions. These include the major Swiss Universities, the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology, as well as independent research institutes such as the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research. It also works in close collaboration with industrial partners.
It comprises six major governing bodies:
Foundation Council: is the highest organ of the Institute; represents the interests of SIB institutional partners.
Board of Directors: defines the Institute’s scientific strategy, internal procedures and core bioinformatics resources to be maintained by the Institute
Executive Director: is responsible for the overall management of the Institute
Council of Group Leaders: discusses all matters relating to the Institute’s groups as a whole
Scientific Advisory Board: makes recommendations on the Institute's activities
