Management


Ron Appel

Executive Director

Ron D. Appel graduated in Computer Sciences at the University of Geneva, where he also received his Ph.D. in 1987, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard School of Public Health. He was co-founder in 1998 of the SIB, where he led the Proteome Informatics Group (PIG). The group developed proteomics software and databases, in particular the Melanie 2-D gel electrophoresis analysis software and the SWISS-2DPAGE database, as well as tools for the identification and characterization of proteins using mass spectrometry. Ron Appel is also the initiator of and co-responsible for ExPASy, the world's first Web site dedicated to protein molecular biology. He is professor of bioinformatics at the University of Geneva and is also scientific co-founder of two biotechnology companies in Geneva: one in bioinformatics - Geneva Bioinformatics (GeneBio) - and the other one in high-throughput proteomics - GeneProt. ernest feytmans

Honorary Director

Ernest Feytmans graduated in Cell Biology and in Statistics at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. He received his Ph.D. in 1973 for a thesis with Jacques Berthet and Christian de Duve and he carried out a postdoctoral fellowship with Christian de Duve at the Rockefeller University. He was professor at the Catholic University of Santiago, Chile until 1975 and then full professor at Namur University, Belgium, heading the Department of Biology and the Unit of Structural Molecular Biology. He was also Chancellor from 1982 to 1987 and Dean of the Faculty of Sciences from 1991 to 1997. He was then appointed at the University of the West Indies as Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences and Head of the Biochemistry Unit. His major research interests have focused more recently on the prediction of protein 3D-structures using atomic mean force potentials. In 2001, he was appointed General Manager of the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics and he is participating in the setting-up of a Bioinformatics Core Facility at ISREC.  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. jocelyne bocquet

Finance

Jocelyne Bocquet received a degree in financial management in 1982, and she has always worked in different areas of financial trusts, institutions, foundations and associations. She was responsible for the accounting department of the Chamber of Commerce in Lausanne for nine years before joining the SIB. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Communications


Irène Perovsek holds a degree in foreign languages (German and English) from the University of Strasbourg. During the last 14 years, she worked for the chemical industry where she was trained to the main communication activities. She spent most of her career in France as Communication Head of a production site, before joining the Swiss Headquarters in late 2008, where she developed the European intranet.
At the SIB, she looks after internal and external communications, branding, media relations, institutional publications and the SIB website. Irène Perovsek

 

Human Resources

Véronique Mangold started her career as a teacher for handicapped children and teenagers with learning difficulties. She then studied Theology at the University of Geneva and got a training in Human Resources. Véronique joined the SIB’s Swiss-Prot and PIG groups in June 2000 where she was in charge of diverse activities before creating their HR department in 2002. In October 2009, she became the Head of the SIB's Human Resources department. Véronique Mangold

 

Administration

After a high-school diploma in business and administration, two years of Political Science and a year of Psychology respectively at the Universities of Lausanne and Geneva, Maria Barreiro experienced working at the main media companies of the French part of Switzerland, where she assisted in the departments of Subscriptions, Marketing, and in the editorial at Edipresse SA (Le Nouveau Quotidien, Animan, Le Matin, 24Heures) and at Ringier AG (TV8 Radio, L'Illustré, dimanche.ch). Financial assistant

Sabine Perlini received a commercial degree in 1984. She then worked as an accountant in diverse companies until the birth of her first child in 1989.

Secretary

Sylvie Clottu holds a degree in foreign languages (English, Italian and German) as well as a tourism degree. She worked 1 year for an airline company in Geneva airport and almost 3 years at the Swiss railway company (CFF) in Lausanne before leaving to Dublin, Ireland where she studied photography and graphic design. After 2 years and a half she came back to Switzerland to work at Les Diablerets tourist office for 2 years and in a real-estate for 1 year.
